For those who don't know what I am talking about (Follow me through Facebook to know a lot more!) I am making an Indie Guide A-Z! This will be a huge project and a enormous pleasure to do! So .. what am I going to do? Everyday, I'm going to show you a different brand of Indie Nail Polishes (and some of their major stockists too!! )
* * *
I began experimenting and making my own polish in January 2012, I opened a shop and began selling in April 2012 to raise money for a missions trip I was going on in June.
Is there a story behind the name of your brand?
WingDust; it's that beautiful shimmery dust that's left on your fingertips after you've held a butterfly in your hands. I think the name is pretty fitting for a product that adds a little sparkle to your fingertips, but the back-story behind the name is not always the easiest thing to think about.
"WingDust" is something I wrote a poem about. It's inspired by a beautiful, broken butterfly I found on the side of a country road the day after my birthday- the same afternoon that a very dear friend of mine was killed in a car crash.
WingDust, while it was a term born out of a painful tragedy, has come to symbolize everything that is beautiful and fleeting in life. It's those memories- and sometimes people- that you hold in your heart because they only last a moment, and when they're gone all you're left with is that lingering feeling, that sparkley impression they left on your life.
Right now there are about 30 polishes that rotate in the shop regularly, that doesn't account for the million and one polishes that I have at home though! I'm always creating and am ALWAYS covered in glitter so that number is constantly growing :)
Is there a special polish/collection? Why?
The polishes that are closest to my heart are the Cara memorial polish and the Zambia Collection. The Cara polish is not listed as a regular polish in the shop, it was made in loving memory of Cara at the request of her wonderful mother, Aggie.
The Zambia Collection is a set of 5 polishes inspired by my trip to Africa this past summer. The trip was the reason I started selling in the first place, so it only seemed fitting to come back and try to put at least some of those memories and experience into a bottle to share with all the wonderful people who helped support me to go.
Where you a polish addicted before starting making polishes?
To be honest, no! I can thank (blame?!) my lovely co-worker, Hailey, for the polish bug that has changed my life. When I started my new job and met Hailey, she opened my eyes to the crazy, beautiful world of indie polish. Being an artsy person I immediately loved the idea of being able to create something beautiful- something you could paint a picture with, all in just one bottle!
Did you have a blog before making polishes or have you started one after?
I created a blog quite recently, mainly as an avenue to keep followers updated on some of the inside details of what goes into WingDust. I have to admit however, that I am a horrible blogger! There never seems to be enough time to go around so the blog sometimes gets left un-edited for long periods of time while I'm focusing on other priorities.
Whats your favorite thing about making polishes?
I love the colors, the effect you can create and the image you can portray with one bottle of polish can be so inspiring and the options are endless :)
Can you tell us a curious thing that has happened to you with some client or something funny?
There was a lady from Brazil who bought a single mini bottle from me. I included a 2nd mini bottle as a bonus for her, wrapped everything up and sent it off. She contacted me a few weeks later saying she didn't receive the polish she ordered, only the bonus. I thought I was going crazy- I was sure I had packed 2 polishes! I asked her to double-check and apparently I wrapped her package a little TOO well- she had actually thrown out the 2nd bottle with the packaging without even realizing it :) Note to self: stop hiding the products from the customer!
I do have some of the coolest customers on the block though- there are some ladies who have bought my polishes from the time I first started as a fundraiser, up until now! So that's kinda cool to see and pretty humbling too, I've made some really amazing friends through this whole process.
This is a gorgeous glitter in a gelly blue base and filled with multicolored square and round glitter in shades of blue and purple. I applied it without any base color, in tree coats and the outcome is amazing. I couldn't stop looking at my nails.
Total Pink Bomb
This polish is a gorgeous pink replete with silver shimmer and small holographic glitter. I applied 1 coat over Purple Professional nr.3. Easy application, nice brush and fast drying time.
Blue Like Jazz
This is a deep blue ocean shimmer polish, very similar to 'Total Pink Bomb' . Gorgeous base color filled with silver shimmer and subtitle holographic small glitters.
He's Just not That Mint-to-you
This is a glitter top filled with various shades and sizes of mint glitter and some opalescent glitters too. Spreads evenly and dries fast. Two coats over Purple Professional nr.51.
This is a blue pastel base color filled with multi-sized and colored glitter in shades of pink, purple and opalescent. Two coats for full opacity with an easy application, smooth brush and fast drying time.
